Hello Families,
Before vacation, your children were writing about why winter is the WARMEST season! We will publish these books on our return to school. Your children will be reading and learning about changes over time. We will continue our work with shadows by creating a Sun Dial! During math time, we will continue to work on our addition and subtraction facts. We will be working with place value too. As part of this unit, we will be using pennies and dimes to reinforce ones and tens. Please have your child bring in a zip-loc bag with the following coins. 30 pennies and 15 dimes. Please make sure that your child's bag is labeled with your child's first and last name. This should come to school by Wednesday. Thank you! I have re-scheduled our breakfast to January 12th. I sent a link to this via e-mail. Have a great rest of your vacation, and please let the Curious Caterpillars know that I said "hello!" Happy Snow Day to the Curious Caterpillars and their Families!
It looks like we will be re-scheduling our breakfast. At this time, I do not have a date, but I am thinking we will be having a New Year's Breakfast some time in mid-January. When I can get a date set, I will send out the information and set up a new Sign Up Genius. For those of you who have been busy making muffins, cinnamon buns, etc. ... I hope your family will be enjoying some sweet treats! A happy and safe vacation wish to all. We are counting down the days until the first day of WINTER! Your children brought home a model to show how the Earth rotates around the sun, and tilts. Be sure to have them show you how it works.
This week we will be discussing signs of winter and learning about how shadows move over time. We are looking forward to a Crafting Hour on Wednesday, a walk to the Food Pantry on Thursday, and our Holiday Breakfast on Friday morning. If you have not done so already, please send in the Permission Slip. If you cannot locate it, please simply write a note indicating that your child has permission to walk to the Food Pantry on Thursday. Thanks! This week there will be NO HOMEWORK. This includes spelling, reading, and math work. We are in an Assessment and Review week for both Reading and Mathematics. I hope you found the link to our Family Letters on the Wonders Reading site. This week and over vacation would be an excellent time to explore the digital component of our math and reading programs. The kids love the online math and reading games, and all of the stories that we have read in our reading program can be accessed from this site. Last week, we created our very own Elves on the Shelves! They even sip hot Chocolate with CH digraph marshmallows. Your kids love these so much, and they really didn't want to keep them in the classroom for too long. We put a special date on the calendar for when they could bring them home! Tomorrow is the BIG DAY! Snow clothes was a NEW challenge this week, and they did GREAT! They are so very proud of themselves! I've heard things like..."Wow, I got my snowpant over my boot all by myself.", "And, look Mrs. Veilleux., (insert any name here), was able to get that done super quick..." They are really proud of their independence and proud of each other! Families, thank you so very much for the GIFT of your children. Each day, they show how very much they are growing as learners in all areas...socially and academically. I am looking forward to a great week! A letter and permission slip will come home tomorrow, but I thought I'd update you on our Food Drive.
The Readiness and First Grade students will be having a Food Drive from December 13-20th. We will then be walking to the New Boston Food Pantry on Thursday, December 21st. We will be delivering our food donations and learning about this community program. If you are able, please have your child bring in non-perishable food and toiletries. The food pantry is currently in need of: Canned meats such as chicken, beef stew, and clam chowder. Peanut butter Jelly School snacks Spaghetti sauce Canned meals such as chili, Spaghetti O's, and ravioli. This week we will be reading about Maps. We will be learning about our community and re-exploring our place on the map. We will review our continent, country, state, and town. This is a difficult concept for students.
This is a great opportunity to review your physical address with your child. This week they will identify the street they live on and their house number. Our spelling patterns this week are very challenging. We will be reading and spelling words with the digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph! We have a Community Food Drive in the works. Information about the Food Drive will come home in the folders later this week! Thank you all for your help with our Craft Day and our Class Breakfast. We are all set with crafts, help, and food! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We will be focusing on Community Helpers and how we can help our community.
We have a new bulletin board up. We wrote about the people that are special to us. If you are in the building, please take a moment to read our writing! I will be sending links to Sign Up Genius regarding a crafting activity and a Holiday Breakfast. |
