This week we will learn some pretty big economic terms with the help of our friend The Little Red Hen. We will read many versions of The Little Red Hen folktale. We will use these stories to learn about goods and services and producers and consumers.
Last week, we learned how to write opinions. We wrote opinions on many topics, and we also selected a book and wrote an opinion on the book! Our opinions on our books will be displayed in the hallway. Be sure to check it out! We will continue to work with this format this week. Families, I am under the weather and will be out tomorrow, and I have a planned absence on Tuesday. A substitute teacher and Miss Kim will be running the classroom. Please take a moment to talk with your child about having a substitute teacher, and the importance of being the same wonderful students that they always are. It is sometimes difficult for the students to have someone new. Emphasizing our three rules...safe, respectful, and responsible with them will go a long way with making their day great. Let them know that I've planned a lot of great things for them to learn on Monday and Tuesday, and I look forward to hearing all about it when I see them on Wednesday. This week we will be reading and learning about Life Long Ago. We will learn about home life and school life and compare it to our present day.
During Math time we have been working on our Number Scrolls. Your children are sequencing numbers past 100! We are also working with comparing numbers and place value. One common misconception with first graders is to write numbers past 100 in this way. 101 would be 1001. We discussed this and walked through how we would say this number 1 one hundred, 0 tens, 1 one. 101. When writing numbers with your child, please take a few numbers and have him/her share how to say the numbers using place value. Ex. 95 would be 9 tens 5 ones. Thank you for all of the PTA Theme Basket donations! The PTA is putting the baskets together, and ours will have amazing items in it! Thank you for supporting our PTA! First graders feel fantastic! Did your child talk to you about alliteration? The opening sentence is an example of alliteration, and we had fun recognizing alliteration this week. We can also recognize verbs and nouns within sentences!
We are working on writing rhyming and free verse poetry. We will continue to explore these formats in the upcoming week. We will be reading folktales this week. Our comprehension focus will be on sequencing and recognizing cause and effect. This past week we learned about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We listened to the story Martin's Big Words, The Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and read about him in our Scholastic News Magazine. During math time, we are comparing numbers and sequencing large numbers. We will begin a number scroll this week, so be sure to ask your children mid-week about their scrolls. The PTA Theme Basket is coming together. Thank you for your donations. There is still time to donate. You can find the sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054bafab23a75-mrs6
Last week we began talking about time. We read A Second is a Hiccup. This book helped us to think about what can happen in a certain amount of time.
We also talked about how the sun appears to move across the sky...setting and rising. The children brought a model home to show how the sun appears to move across the sky. This week we will continue to investigate sky patterns. We will investigate the question: Why do we see the stars at night? We will also learn about Martin Luther King Jr. We are in the finishing stages of our Winter books, and we will be writing a group poem this week about WINTER. We will be practicing making sensible rhymes! Your children are doing a good job with moving between short and long vowel reading and spelling patterns. Even though we are practicing the spelling patterns too, your children will learn to read these words far sooner than they will apply the pattern in their every day writing. They may get them correct on spelling check in day, but please understand it will take time for them to apply these patterns regularly. Your children continue to fill buckets. We are looking forward to our re-scheduled New Year's breakfast. This will happen this Friday, January 12th from 8:45-9:15. We could use two more serving volunteers and if anyone could bring hot chocolate that would be terrific. You can click here to get to the sign up page. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c4cacad28a3f94-newyears We have a great week ahead! Next week we will be starting a BIG NUMBERS project. We are in need of empty paper towel tubes. Please save these and send them in! Thank you!
We had a great day back!
Homework is coming home today. As a reminder, reading home letters will now be found on the ConnectED website. You can access them via your child's password card. We are starting a challenging reading and spelling pattern. I encourage all families to try out the activities on the ConnectED site. This week, a book will not come home. However, books are available digitally on the ConnectED platform. If you have not done so already, please have your child bring in 30 pennies and 15 dimes. We will be using them for Math work. Thank you |
