June 1, 2018 Dear Curious Caterpillar Families, On Monday New Boston Central School will be celebrating our Reading Challenge success! In a combined effort, over the last 12 weeks, our school has read 7,939 books and 34,340,136 words! The entire school will be walking down to the softball fields by the white buildings to celebrate our reading accomplishment. Classes will be reading with their reading buddies from 1:10 - 1:45 in the afternoon (in their designated area). PLEASE send in a few items to make the afternoon fun for your child and his/her reading buddy. Top on the list would be blankets and towels to lounge on while they read. Also, if it is a sunny day, please send in hats, sunglasses, and even umbrellas that can be propped up on their blankets, allowing them to read in some shade. We would like to thank the P.T.A. for sponsoring this event and supplying a keepsake prize for all of the students who joined in on the challenge! We dream…. We wish…. We believe… We READ! We are New Boston! Last week we enjoyed our trip to Odiorne Point. When we got back we wrote about our trip and we began a writing about some of the Tide Pool creatures.
I hope you have heard about our chicken eggs. We are incubating 7 chicken eggs. Your children will be learning about the life cycle and learning about other animals that lay eggs too. We have learned about many U.S. Symbols. We learned about the history of our flag and about many other U.S. Symbols too. During library, we were able to go on a Virtual Field Trip guided by Mrs. Charles. The children used 3D goggles to "visit" and learn about The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, Mt. Rushmore, and the St. Louis Arch. This week we will select a U.S. Symbol and your child will use resources to research that symbol! Our school will observe Memorial Day on May 30th. Please have your child wear red, white, and/or blue in any combination. They will be singing a song at our assembly and learning about Memorial Day. The community is welcome to attend the assembly. It begins at 9 a.m. and generally lasts an hour. This week your children will take on more of their own learning! They will be creating their own spelling list tomorrow based on words that they feel have been challenging for them. As a reminder, your child should be returning their Homework Logs each Friday. Please encourage your child to attempt to fill this out the Minutes Read part on his/her own. We are working on mastering our time to the hour and to the half hour. We will continue to work on this at school. Any opportunity to have your child read an analog clock will help them to see this skill in the every day world. The Open House and AIR presentation was wonderful. The kids did a great job being IN CHARGE!
A reminder of what to bring for our Field Trip on Monday went home today. If your child was absent, no worries, the list is the same as the list that went home with the original Permission Slip! Our T-Shirts are here! The kids will wear them on the Field Trip and they will keep them here at school for Special Events. The shirts will go home at the end of the school year! They are ADORABLE. I'll be sure to click a picture of all of us in our sunshiney shirts when we are at the Rocky Shore! This is listed on the note, but families, please be at the school at 3:30 for pick up on Monday. We are so excited to be scientists and to explore the Rocky Shore habitat!
We are excited to see the production of Junie B. Jones! We read the first book in this series this week! Many students took out Junie B. books from the library.
The kids and I talked today about dressing up a "bit" for Monday. Nothing fancy, but that we were representing New Boston Central School and that we want to be comfortable, but a bit dressier than our usual. If it is possible for your child to dress up a bit on Monday, please have him/her do so. As a reminder, your child will need a snack and a lunch packed for the day. Please do not pack any glass. Our tree planting on Old Coach Rd. was really fun! The children planted two trees each...one tree for them and one for the town. The plan is that they will return each year to care for the tree and when they are in sixth grade, they will have the opportunity to keep growing the tree or to cut it down as a Christmas tree! The town and the Forestry Commission were wonderful teachers! Tomorrow is our day to plant trees on Old Coach Road. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. Applying sunscreen and bug spray before coming to school is recommended. School policy prohibits me from applying sunscreen or bug spray to students. Please be sure that this is done at home.
Please be sure that your child has a water bottle daily. You may even want to pack a spare! Tomorrow we will work with our Artist in Residence, Marc Ragonese. We will be working outside. Please be sure the kids come dressed to work outside.
If you have not yet done so, please fill out the permission slip to plant trees with the Forestry Commission and the Town of New Boston. We will be going to do this on Friday! |
