Spelling is a developmental process. We will have patterned spelling words weekly. Your child will be assessed on these words. This is one step in your child's path to being a life-long speller.
Here is a suggested routine for at-home practice.
1. Say the word to your child and discuss its meaning. Show the word to your child for 5 seconds. Hide the word. Have your child verbally spell the word to you.
2. Show the word to your child. Have your child read the word and verbally say the word in a sentence. Hide the word. Spell the word on paper.
3. Show the word to your child. Have your child read the word. Hide the word. Have your child write the word in crayon or marker. Use green for consonants and red for vowels.
4. Review by any of the above ideas. Have your child verbalize word meaning by using the word in a sentence. 5. Encourage your child to write by keeping a journal of some sort. Let your child draw and write freely. Stay away from commenting on spelling, but instead on the content. When your child asks to spell a word...put it back on them with comments such as..."How about you try the beginning sounds and see where it takes you."
Your child will be assessed on these words, but that is just one step on the life time path of being a speller. As your child progresses, we will begin to see application of these patterned words in your child's daily writing. That is the true assessment of spelling acquisition! This won't happen over night, but with instruction, practice, and daily writing opportunities, your child will develop strong spelling skills!
