I hope your vacations have been filled with family time.
The upcoming week will find us reading and learning about animal behavior. We will learn how animals help each other. We will also continue our study on animal features. Our Math work will focus on using doubles and near doubles to help us efficiently solve addition problems. We continue to work on recognizing and writing larger numbers. Your child's scroll came home on Friday! They are very proud of their work! The Book Fair is this week. We will preview the Book Fair, and your child will come home with a Wish List. If you would like to purchase books, we will be doing so on Wednesday. Wednesday is also our library day. We have had many forgotten books. Please be sure that your child brings his/her book back on Wednesday. That way your child can get a new book to enjoy. Families, I've had a few technical difficulties with emails. In one instance, some correspondence went to junk mail. In another, a message came in two weeks after it was sent! So...please, if you send me an email that warrants a response, and you don't hear back from me within 24 hours, please give me a call or send me a note. I make every effort to respond in a timely manner, so if you don't hear back, it's likely that something has gone awry. Oh! I have been informed by Ms. Baines, that our class has won an Amazon Gift Card because of our high involvement in Jump Rope for Heart! Thank you for your contributions. Please let the kids know. We will discuss how to best spend this card to benefit our classroom learning! We have been learning about goods, services, producers, and consumers. We took what we learned and applied it to the story, The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. The children used the story to decide on who were the producers, who were the consumers, and what were the goods.
We enjoyed a fun Jump Rope for Heart time, and we had a great Valentine celebration. Thank you for the yummy treats and the help! We have been busy with our math and reading assessments. I'd enjoy an opportunity to sit with you and review the results of your child's assessments and to discuss your child's progress to date. Please let me know if you'd like to schedule a time to chat. Our week ended with a great trip to the New Boston Historical Society. They learned about what life was like for New Boston children 100 years ago. The Historical Society is a community treasure, and I encourage you to visit with your child. This upcoming week we will finish a science unit on light and sound. We will also be reading about animal features. We will be learning to spell and read words with the long vowel a patterns of ai, ay, and a. We will continue to work with adding two digit numbes to one digit numbers. Towards the end of the year, we will be heading on a field trip to Odiorne Point. We need many volunteers to make this trip a success. Any volunteer for this trip must have the Designated Volunteer Status.
Our Odiorne dates have not yet been set. I will let you know the dates as soon as they have been solidified. The following message has been posted in our school's Bobcat News. ***************** From the "Bobcat News"... Designated Volunteer Fingerprinting: The Goffstown Police Department (GPD) has partnered with SAU 19 to provide a community service to support our school volunteers. GPD will now accept SAU 19 volunteers at the police station (located at 326 Mast Road) during the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Please note you only have 30 days from the date you get fingerprinted to get all the forms to the state, so it is critical you return the forms to the SAU ASAP after the fingerprinting. Please refer to our website to view procedures...under “Resources” then “Volunteer”. February is a busy month of showing what we know and starting some new concepts and expectations too.
This past week we learned about the concept of an hour. It was very tricky for the students to understand things that take "about an hour" to complete. We also learned about Needs and Wants. We will add to this study next week by learning about Goods and Services and Producers and Consumers. We are learning to compare and contrast stories too. We read many versions of The Little Red Hen. We then compared the stories using venn diagrams to decide what is similar and what is different. Next week will be a BIG week in first grade. We will continue with our math assessment, and we will be taking our benchmark reading assessment too. There will be NO new spelling words this week. Jump Rope for Heart and Valentine's Day will be on Thursday. We enjoyed a Design Day on Friday, and we have some very creative mailboxes. On Friday, we will visit the Historical Society. I am missing quite a few permission slips. Please return these by Monday. If you have misplaced the slip, please write and sign a note stating the following: I give (child's name) permission to walk to the Historical Society on Friday, February 15th. Additionally, we will be studying Light and Sound. We will be making observations and designing an instrument. If you have any toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls, we could use these. Please send in any that you may have by Wednesday. Looking forward to a fabulous week! We are learning about the past and comparing it to the present. We read The Joesefina Story Quilt. This story is about a young pioneer girl and her family's adventures on their way to California. We will continue our study of the past and present for part of next week.
Our study of the past will lead us into learning about Needs and Wants. We touched upon this a bit this past week when we discussed that Faith and her family could only take what they needed on their trip west. We are working on our mid-year Math Assessment. We are showing what we have learned as well as moving into some new learning. We will begin to work on time and on working with adding two digit and 1 digit numbers. As the children are exposed to adding two digits, we are also continually working on automatic recall of our facts to 10. Your child is automatic with a fact is he/she can give the answer within 3 seconds. January and February can be a time of illness. I am happy to put a few papers together for your child when they are absent, but I will also direct you to the Reading and Math site. www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com/school/h8x0 From here your child can access the reading and math that we are currently working on. All of the books, spelling, grammar, and math concepts are right there. This is also where you can access the "School to Home" letters that will support what we are learning in the classroom. I encourage you to use this site weekly. Your child's card has been sent home previously, and it is likely that they know their passwords by now, as we do use the site here at school too. However, if you'd like another card sent home, please let me know. We will be having a Valentine Party and the information on that can be found at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0C4CACAD28A3F94-valentines I will send a class list home week for Valentines. As part of our engineering and design curriculum, we will be making Valentine Mailboxes here at school. Information on materials will be sent home this week too. |
