Welcome to First Grade!
I am so excited that you will be a part of our amazing class! We will have lots of fun as we learn. We will do lots of creating and exploring. This year will be one filled with wonder and discovery. I have many wonder-filled lessons to share with you! We'll build, we'll explore, and we'll imagine! I love to read, and we will read lots of great books together. I also love to write books with you, so throughout the year we will write and illustrate many books! First graders are authors and artists! I bet you have lots of questions for me, and you can get those questions answered in late August! Until then, please explore the website tabs to learn about our classroom. The “Nuts and Bolts”, “School Supplies”, and “Wish List” tabs will be a great place to learn the ins and outs of our classroom and what you will need to start the year. I will update those lists throughout the summer, as we are given further directives on what our school year will look like. Let’s Wonder and Discover! Mrs. Veilleux Today we will have our last ZOOM meeting of the 2019-20 school year. I hope to see all of the students at 10:00. Today is an NBCS apparel day, so if the kids could wear their class t-shirt or other NBCS gear, that would be great.
I have posted one final assignment, so please check out the assignments page. I was hoping by year's end, there might have been a way to gather, or see each other in a socially distant way, but I haven't been able to think of a way that would seem natural and right for the kids. Thank you for all that you have done to make this last part of the year one of growth for your children. You are all remarkable! As I wrote in my email yesterday, I will read one final book to the class. In the book, it talks about a teacher planting her "garden" and her "plants" needing different things. Each plant has its own needs... some needing a special watching over and some blooming anywhere you put them. As this year ends, I see a garden of first graders that have bloomed, and thank you for sharing in the job of being their teacher. Hello Families,
The reading day was fun. I enjoyed reading the kids responses to the books. I'll keep the books up for today in case the kids wanted to reread or didn't get to a book. Today is FIELD DAY! I have posted the link to the activities on both my website and on SEESAW. Mrs. Winchell and the Integrated Arts Team have done a phenomenal job putting together these activities. Please post a picture to SEESAW if you can. I provided an activity so that the kids can do this. I'll share out any pictures that I receive at our 10:00 Snack ZOOM! Have a great day! Today is all about reading. Each first grade teacher has selected a book for your child to enjoy. Read one, read two, or read them all.
Please be sure to have your child attend the 9:30 ZOOM with Mrs. Charles and Mrs. Ballou. They will be sharing information about summer reading. Our class will ZOOM at 12:45 today. Have your child bring a book or a pile to show. We'll sign off at 1:00 to enjoy some quiet reading time. I have sent the ZOOM info for today via e-mail. Today is the day for the kids to gather their materials and get ready for Wednesday's Field Day! As part of that, please have them locate their red class T-shirt. I'm hoping they'll show that they are READYYYYY by taking a picture with a sign or signal that shows that they are ready for Field Day. Any pics I receive by 1:00 pm today, I'll use to create a collage to send to Mrs. Winchell to let her know the Detecting Donuts are READYYYY!
In today's 10:00 Zoom we will be reading parts of the Scholastic News that I posted. Students should also bring their LEGOS if they have them. No Legos? No problem. Come with any blocks or building materials that you may have. When I asked last week what might be some activities they'd like to do together during this last week, LEGOS was a popular response. We'll use them to do a "Following Directions" challenge and see what designs emerge. Will we all have the same design? Will it be different? We will see! Tomorrow, is our Read-A-Thon Day. We will have a ZOOM with Mrs. Charles and the town librarian Mrs. Ballou at 9:30. Our ZOOM time will be at 12:45 that day. For our ZOOM time, Children should have their books ready for reading and we'll spend 15 minutes sharing what books we are planning on reading. We'll sign off at 1:00 to participate in the READ-A-THON. I'll send Zoom information for both events via e-mail today. Our guidance counselor has a message for our students. www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5VhXPcLuks&feature=youtu.be Today's learning will get the kids thinking about summer and summer safety.
Children should also complete their Memory Books today and their Fluency passages. Your child should also complete any work that was not completed over the course of the week. For today's ZOOM, I have a story called This School Year Was Different. I am also inviting children to bring their completed signs from earlier in the week to the ZOOM. Please ask your child to be prepared to share one detail/memory from their sign. Please be sure to read yesterday's post below for information about two special activities that are happening next week. Today, students have been assigned a reading fluency passage. Please remind your child to practice before recording and submitting. We will continue our work with traditions. Your children should continue to work on their Memory Books. Your child should spend time working on the pictures and being accurate with their spelling and conventions. Our first grade memory signs are wonderful. If your child has not yet submitted it, please be sure that your child does this today. I will be using them to create an end of the year slide show. Speaking of the end of the year, there are two very special events going on next week. Zoom times will remain the same for Monday, but after that, our end of the year activities will begin. On Tuesday, it's all about reading. We will have a different ZOOM time...9:30 on that day. This ZOOM will be a grade level wide event. We will learn about the town's Summer Reading program. I will post Zoom info in an email. We will also be having our school-wide virtual Drop Everything and Read event in the afternoon. I will have a different ZOOM time on this day. Details to follow... On Wednesday, it is our NBCS Virtual Field Day. I will have a Snack ZOOM on this day. We will bring our snacks and talk about the events the kids have participated in. On Thursday, we will have our end of the year ZOOM. At this time, we will look back at our year and say our good byes. ******************************************** Here is video to let you know a bit more about our school-wide reading celebration. This event is traditionally organized by Mrs. Howe's and Mrs. Prive's classrooms. Thank you to these two classes for continuing to bring this to us virtually! Field Day Information from Mrs. Winchell can be found by clicking on this link or if the link doesn't work, there's a file below......Family Field Day Letter
Today we continue to work with the concept of traditions. Children will listen to the Mem Fox story, Wilfrid Gordon Mcdonald Partridge. In this heartwarming story, the character learns what a memory is. Children will then begin a project to make their first grade Memory Book. Please have children spend the time on this to make it a lasting memory. This is a project that is expected to be completed by Friday, so they have several days to put thought and care into it. Children can save their work as a draft and return to it over the course of the week. Please support your child in making a quality attempt.
Our math work today is about finding the difference. Children will be working with money to find price increases. This is very tricky. I have also included an optional number comparison activity as a review. In today's 10 o'clock ZOOM, I will be reviewing the math lesson. Students who participate in the ZOOM, will have completed the lesson portion of today's math. They will then be ready to do the SEESAW math work. We will practice with money and then play a difference game together. We will also celebrate a class member's summer birthday! Please encourage your child to complete their XtraMath sessions and to try some activities from the Enrichment tab. Hello Families,
Today we will begin to create some end of the year first grade memories. It is a tradition at the end of first grade that we take time to reflect upon our year. We think about the projects we created and the memories that we made. After reading today's story, Lissy's Friends, children will be challenged to do just that. In the assignments, there is a sign to print. After printing the sign, children will fill the sign with words and pictures that remind them of their year in first grade. Please then take a photo of your child holding the created sign and upload it to SEESAW. Please have your child spend time reflecting and creating. I will be using these pictures to create our traditional end of the year photo show. Our Math work revisits two digit addition. I've also included a challenge to have students create their own Vending Machine. Please also encourage your child to complete a session of XtraMath today. In today's ZOOM, we will focus on the math lesson. We will do a bit of work two digit numbers. We will then be playing a Hundreds Chart game. It is essential that children have a Hundreds Chart for this ZOOM. We will wrap up our ZOOM today by celebrating a classmate's summer birthday with a special birthday book. Hello June, This week, we will be learning about traditions. We talked about traditions last week during Friday's ZOOM. This week, we will read about some traditions, and then participate in some New Boston Central School first grade traditions. Speaking of traditions, another NBCS tradition is FIELD DAY! This will be held virtually this year. I will share this video with the kids today during our ZOOM, but I wanted to share it here as well. https://youtu.be/IAe82cad0SQ In today's ZOOM, students will read the Wonders' story, A Spring Birthday with me. We will focus on reading this to look for clues to the theme. We will also review the contents of today's math lesson by playing a game called SCOOT. To play this game, students should come prepared to the meeting with a paper numbered 1-15 with room to complete 15 math problems. They should also have a Hundreds Chart. After today's 10:00 ZOOM lesson, students will be prepared to head over to SEESAW to complete the activities for today. Today is the day to complete their Weather Journal as well! Please be sure that your child is taking the time to do XtraMath or to practice addition and subtraction facts. |
