Historically, Memorial Day was recognized on May 30th. Over the course of the years, the holiday has been changed to be observed on the last Monday in May. It is the tradition at New Boston Central School to recognize Memorial Day on or near May 30th. If we were in the New Boston Central School building, we would have our traditional Memorial Day presentation today.
During this presentation, members of our community would be recognized for their service to our country. Members of our community would share the meaning of Memorial Day and the history of how it was first known as Decoration Day. Each grade level would have shared songs that honor a branch of the military. Thank you to all who have served. In today's lessons, I have tried to bring you a bit of what we would have experienced as a school community. In today's 10:00 Zoom we will share the Virtual Memorial Day presentation that has been created by the administration at N.B.C.S. I will also have our flag projects from last week. Those who would like to share their flags are welcome to do so. Remember, today is a Spirit Day. You are welcome to come to ZOOM in Red, White, and/or Blue! Good Morning Families,
Today, the lessons will take the kids to the Scholastic News site. Here they will read about how different animals protect themselves from the sun. They will also watch a video with weather words. They should pay special attention to the words and to the art work. They will then be challenged to create a weather related art project. They decide what and how they want to do it. This is due on Friday. Our math work builds upon yesterday's learning. Students will be learning strategies to add three or more numbers. In today's ZOOM, students will learn to use place value concepts to add three numbers. As with yesterday, they should come prepared with a Hundreds Chart and writing tools. We will also be reading and searching for words with the wr pattern today. Please remind your child to fill out his/her weather journal and to complete their Wonders games. Tomorrow is a school wide Spirit Day. In honor of Memorial Day, students are invited to wear RED, WHITE, and BLUE. Good Morning Families,
Today your children will be reading a story about some different kinds of weather. In today's ZOOM, we will be reading a tall tale about Paul Bunyan and a blizzard of popcorn! Our ZOOM meeting will also focus on today's math lesson. This lesson focuses on adding two digit numbers at a "School Store". We will be virtual shopping at the Detecting Donuts Store! Students who attend will review the concepts of the math lesson. They will be adding two digit numbers, so a Hundreds Chart is ESSENTIAL. Students should also come prepared with a dry erase board or paper and a writing tool. After today's ZOOM, students will be prepared to do the School Store SEESAW activity. Thank you for supporting the students with their learning and supporting quality behavior during the ZOOM meetings. I think overall the kids have been focused, attentive, and prepared! Thank you for remembering to help your child to PIN me when they enter the meeting. This really helps them to see my teaching and my screen. I do ask that the kids not be muted, and I've appreciated the effort to reduce background noise! Thank you! Hello Families,
I hope your long weekend was full of family time. This week, we will be reading about how the weather affects us. Today's reading will be about children who start each year of school by building their school house. Each year, the school is washed away during the rainy season. I will read and discuss this story with the class during our morning ZOOM. Additionally, in today's ZOOM, I will review using non standard measurement. We practiced this quite a bit during the school year. If your child is attending today's ZOOM, they should come with 10 paper clips that are of the same size. (There is also a printable copy of paper clips on the Enrichment Tab. ) However, if paper clips aren't handy, any items that are the same and of the same size will work. For instance, they could come with 10 small Lego Blocks of the same size, 10 same sized buttons, 10 same sized noodles... Your child should also come with these things...a book, a spoon, a cutting board or a regular board (small), and one shoe! Families, we are coming towards the end of our school year, but we still have a couple of weeks of learning time ahead of us. I know in the classroom how tricky this time can be. The weather is nice, change is in the air, and there is a mixture of emotions. The thought of school work is not on the top of the list of a first grade child's list! It becomes a balancing act of keeping interest in school work. I am trying to keep the weeks ahead "normal" with a few more options to break things up for your children. As always, please reach out if you'd like me to do some individual times with your child via ZOOM or phone. Please keep the attendance sheets coming! You are all appreciated. Today, your child will continue to learn about symbols of the United States. They will then take that understanding and create a flag to symbolize themselves. They can do this right on SEESAW, or they can create a paper version.
Today is a whole school Spirit Day. It's Sports Day! Children are invited to wear their favorite fan wear or uniform to ZOOM today. In ZOOM today, we will read and learn about Memorial Day. The children did a great job on their math check-in! Way to go Detecting Donuts! Today, your child has a reading fluency check-in. The children should practice before they attempt this. As they are reading, they should try to problem solve when they come to areas of difficulty. They have learned as readers that they can reread a word, phrase, or sentence to try to gain meaning and understanding. If your child has tried to problem-solve the word, it is okay to tell your child the word and let him/her move on. In today's ZOOM, I will be focusing on Social Studies. We will read about America and some of its symbols. We will discuss what a symbol is. We will then extend that learning by focusing on learning about the American Flag. Children who attend this ZOOM will have completed the Social Studies reading portion of today's assignments. They will then need to do the SEESAW activity independently. Tomorrow is a whole school Spirit Day. Sports Day. Come to Friday's ZOOM dressed in your favorite sports or team apparel. Hello Families,
Today, your child will be reading more about being a helper. They should take some time to work with our reading/spelling pattern today. Their book will have some of the patterned words in it, so going on a pattern hunt may be a fun pre-reading or post-reading activity. Today is a math assessment day. Your child has been assigned a math check-in on SEESAW. It will be important for your child to work through these problems independently. It is okay for you to read the questions to your child. Please be sure your child has a Number Grid handy (available on the Enrichment tab- Math Tools), paper, and a writing tool to work out problems. In today's ZOOM, I will be doing a unit review. This will help your child prepare for taking the assessment later today. If your child attends this ZOOM session, it is essential that your child come prepared with the following: A Number Grid, paper or dry erase board, and a writing tool. (Marker or dark ink preferred.) We will be working through problems together, and it will be necessary for them to work through the problems with a Number Grid. Families, I have been asking the children to PIN me to their screen upon entering the ZOOM meeting. This enables them to see me on the FULL screen. This will enable them to see my easel and my learning tools a bit better. I have also asked children to keep their video and audio ON. When these two pieces are OFF, I am unable to see their work when they show me or hear their answers. Whole body listening and participation is essential. Hello Families,
The Community Helpers of the Future are quite amazing! You have some very special kids! Today's work will take them to Meet Rosina. This informational selection shares a day in the life of a young deaf girl named Rosina. We will learn how her day and life is a lot like our own. Your children will have a very special activity on SEESAW from our student expert! In today's ZOOM, we will read and discuss Meet Rosina together. We will discuss the author's purpose and we will do some grammar work with capitalization. We will also work on the Math lesson. Today's math work focuses on knowing the 10 More and 10 Less pattern. The latest installment of Mrs. Macdonald's read aloud has been posted. You can find the tab under Remote Learning. This week your child will explore the question: Who helps you?
They will begin the week re-exploring the topic of Community Helpers. They will think about the future and what kind of helper they might like to be. At the end of the week, they will work on learning about our country and its symbols. Our math work will work to solidify our number sense. The children will work with their number sense and the number grid to quickly identify numbers that are one more, one less, ten more, and ten less than a given number. In today's ZOOM we will begin by rereading a book that the class created in early October. They decided what job they might like to have. This may help them to think about their assignment today...Community Helpers of the Future! Do they still want to do that job or have their interests changed? We will then work on the math lesson for today. After the lesson, the children will need to do the SEESAW math activity independently. We will end today by listening to the assigned text: ALL KINDS OF HELPERS. We will discuss the author's purpose. Today's ZOOM will be about 45 minutes, so we will be taking some movement breaks between. Please be sure that your child comes ready to learn: Focused (green zone), has writing utensils, a Hundreds Chart handy (you can print one from the Enrichment tab- Math Tools), and at the beginning of the ZOOM please "PIN" me. This should make it so that I am larger on the screen. Please review expectations for learning with your child.
Thank you! Today, your child will read more about communities and working together. The class will get to read another book in the Click, Clack series. This time, Duck's writing tool of choice is a pencil. See if your child can detect a helping others theme in this silly story.
Today is a whole class ZOOM! We will practice telling time to the hour, half hour, and we'll stretch it with some times at 5 minute intervals. Please have your child come to the ZOOM with paper and a dark marker. (Marker is easier to see. Thanks for helping my eyes!) |
