We have learned about the position of the sun in the sky at different times of day.
We also did an experiment with ice. We generated questions about ice and then worked to find out what happens when salt is put on ice. Your children generate many fantastic curiosity questions. I encourage them to discuss these with you and to find out the answers to these questions through independent research and exploration. Here are a few examples of their questions... *Can ice be ice if there isn't any water? * Will ice stay ice at 10 degrees above freezing temperature? * What is dry ice? And there were so many more... I wish we could explore and research all of their questions, but I am also hopeful that their curiosity will get them exploring and researching outside of the school day. This week we will read folktales. We will be researching and writing about different animals. Our spelling pattern is quite tricky this week. We will practice a lot at school, but your children will benefit from a little bit more practice reading and spelling these patterned words. I'd like the children to wear their red classroom t-shirts this Thursday! Thank you! Our date for our field trip has been set. We will be going on June 11th. We need lots of chaperones for this trip, so we wanted to get the date out for you now.
If you plan to chaperone, you must have Designated Volunteer status. Please see our school's website or the weekly Bobcat News for information on this. This status can take a while, so please be sure to do it soon if you plan on chaperoning. More information on the trip will come home towards the end of May. Also, there will not be reading homework tonight. We learned about Dr. Martin Luther King today. We made this poster together, and I told the kids that I'd send it to all of you.
(See Below) We also made models of Sun Dials. Be sure to ask your child to show you how to use it to tell the time. Next week we will be learning about changes over time. We have learned about shadows, and we will take our exploration of the sun's position in the sky further next week. We will be reading plays and working on our reading fluency and expression! The Chocolate Lovers basket will have lots of goodies in it. Tickets will go on sale next week. The Thursday notice has information on the cost and the dates. Thank you so much for your help! This week we are learning about the concept of time. Today we learned what might take a minute, an hour, and a day.
We are learning to tell and write time to the hour and the half-hour. We are connecting what we know about digital time and connecting this to analog clocks. We are practicing using an analog clock to move the hands and to accurately tell time. Friday is another outdoor classroom day! Please be sure that your child brings proper outdoor weather gear. We plan to be outside for about an hour. We are continuing to learn the name of our continent, our country, our state, and our community/town. The homework quality has been outstanding! Thank you for your home support. Hello Families,
I wanted to take a moment in the new year to remind families that we are an allergy aware classroom. As of the present moment, we are not a nut free classroom, but I have noticed an increase in nut products coming in. I would like each family to be mindful if you are packing nut products for your child. Please make sure your child is aware that these are present in his/her lunchbox. Packing alternative nut free products is also encouraged. Within the classroom, we are vigilant hand washers. Children wash upon entering, before snacking, before lunch, and if they have a nut product...after eating. Children are also asked to eat over their lunch boxes to keep crumbs to a minimum. Table washing after snack and after school is also done. Please have a conversation with your child about our classroom needs as well as a daily conversation about their snack and lunch contents. Thank you! This week we will be answering the question, "How can we find our way around?" We will be investigating maps, their keys, and cardinal directions. We will read, Me on the Map. This text will help us to understand the words and concepts of continent, country, state, and community.
We are wrapping up our Unit 4 math work. Information about our next unit will come home with your child mid-week. The school's Bobcat News has a weekly reminder about becoming a Designated Volunteer. In order to volunteer within the school and for field trips, you must have Designated Volunteer status. Please see the school's Bobcat News (this comes out each Thursday) for more information. You can also find information about this under the "Volunteer" tab on our school's website. Our regular homework routine will resume this week. I am re-posting information about Homework Expectations below: Expectations:
I received a beautiful red reindeer mug filled with cocoa fixings, a waffle cookie, and marshmallows, but it did not have a tag telling me who the gift giver was. Please know that I appreciate this gift, and if it was from your child, please let me know so I can give a proper thank you! Best to all. I am looking forward to seeing and hearing about your children's vacations! We will have a fun game of Newsball tomorrow morning!
This week we will be learning to use tens or "decades" to add 3 numbers. Children will learn that with a number sentence such as 7+4+3 to first mentally add 7+3 to get to 10. From there, 10+4 equals 14. This week we will be writing sensory poems. Our science work will investigate why birds have beaks, and why different birds have different types of beaks. We will experiment by using different beaks. The children loved performing their Reader's Theater production, and the party was a fun event. Thank you too for all of your thoughtful gifts. I am excited to see the Detecting Donuts tomorrow! |
