March is here! I am so excited to see your kids on Tuesday. We will continue to learn about changes over time, and this week it is all about how plants grow and change over time. We'll be starting spring a bit early by doing a little classroom planting of our own! In math we begin a scrolling project. Your children will be working to read, write, and sequence numbers past 120. This is a traditional and memorable first grade math project. As the scrolls progress, they begin to measure their length...first it's longer than their desk, then it reaches the floor, becomes taller than a first grader, and on and on it grows. You will see that on SEESAW, I have changed the format of the journal to a CHOICE board. I hope this will be a new and engaging journal experience. This week, your child will be asked to head to IXL and use the Diagnostic Arena. We haven't done this since the first weeks of using IXL, so please be sure to listen to my video and please repeat to your child that this is independent, and that if your child is asked a question that is too difficult, there is a button that says, "I haven't learned this yet!" Please have your child use this button when needed. :] Friday is a school-wide Crazy Hat spirit day. Your child is invited to come to ZOOM wearing a crazy hat. Paper, cloth, purchased, or homemade...all crazy hats are welcome! I am looking forward to a great week! I'll see your Shining Super Stars soon! We learned about Abraham Lincoln this week. The kids will read about him in Scholastic News tomorrow too! We made our own Abraham Lincolns and we learned about his contributions. We also learned where he kept his very important papers! Be sure to ask your child.
The kids are doing well with their long vowel sounds. Distinguishing short vowels from long vowels is tricky, and it is a big focus throughout the remainder of grade 1. We will have our spelling test on Thursday, 2/18. Our Valentine celebration will be on Tuesday, the 16th. I will have a bag for the kids to decorate and to put their Valentines in. They do not need to bring in a special container, we'll do that here. Children may bring Valentines to deliver to their classmates. Including candy is fine, as long as it is factory packaged. On Tuesday, we will have a regular snack and then a second PARTY Snack time. Please pack a regular snack for your child on that day. The party time and second snack will be in the afternoon. We have a few treats coming in, and some juice boxes. If someone could donate small water bottles, those would be great! The kids continue to learn and grow. They are doing their very best to continue to stay socially distant. They have done a good job with their masks too. Please remind your child how important it is to have their mask cover their nose. They are great when reminded, but I'd like to have to remind on this a bit less. Masks with a pinchable metal piece are GREAT! The work on SEESAW continues to show quality and care. The kids are making great efforts to complete these lessons and activities. The work on IXL has been terrific as well. Thank you for your continued support of your child's learning on these remote days! This week we focused on writing about our reading. Children are beginning to write descriptively. We will continue this week by writing poetry in class. Our SEESAW journaling time will be to write and respond to books we read at home. Please be sure to have your child complete their Monday - Wednesday journal. Writing daily is essential. Your children's writing skills are developing. Your children are writing sentences and are beginning to apply their spelling and punctuation knowledge within their own bodies of writing. It is one thing to write one sentence or to fix a sentence in isolation, but to write multiple sentences and to apply punctuation is quite a skill to develop. Your children are developing! This week we will begin a new unit called "Changes Over Time". This unit will incorporate reading, science, social studies, and math! We will learn about Abraham Lincoln. We will learn about the penny and do activities around the penny. We will connect our knowledge of a penny and a dime to our work with place value. The 100th Day of School will be on Thursday. We will do some fun counting and exercise activities around the number 100! We will celebrate Valentine's Day on February 16th. A list of students went home on Thursday. If you are able to have your child bring in a pre-packaged/factory packaged treat, please see below. Information about Valentine's Day is also below. |
