Hello Families,
I hope everyone is having a restful vacation! Next week we will learn about how animals help each other. We will be researching and writing about how animals use different body parts for protection, communication, eating, and moving. We will be creating, discovering, and being a team. Before we left for vacation, the kids were excited to receive some new supplies. New crayons, new erasers, new name tags, and we are READY to start March! Our class is in need of a few maintenance supplies, so if you are able to donate, we are in need of disinfecting wipes, soft tissues for those lasting winter colds, hand-wipes/baby wipes, and an eco friendly spray cleaner. Thank you! This week is a school-wide Spirit Week... Theme Days Monday- NBCS Pride Day (Blue & Yellow) Tuesday- Animal Print Day (Stuffed Animal Day) Wednesday- Tropical Day Thursday- Camp Day (I'm really not sure what this one is about...we may sing a camp song or two...) Friday- Parade of Nations Pep Rally - WEAR your RED NBCS Class T-shirt PLEASE! Our Walking Field Trip is tomorrow. Please make sure your child dresses for the weather. This week we will read and learn about where our food comes from. We will learn about Producers and Consumers.
We will read several versions of The Little Red Hen. We will use this familiar folktale to identify who the producers and consumers are. We will also revisit goods and services. On Friday, we created "Star Gazer" models of The Big Dipper. Please have your child show you how this works. Your child will need a flashlight. If your child has two flashlights, he/she can explain to you why we don't see stars in the daytime. Last week I re-sent your child's Wonders access card home. Going forward, please use the information presented in my letter to reinforce our schoolwork at home. I have provided a copy of the letter below. ******************************* Detecting Donuts Homework Goes Digital… Thank you for your work with establishing a consistent homework routine with your child! Going forward, your child will be expected to utilize this site for reading and math homework. I will not be collecting homework, but will expect that your child does the following each week.
This week we read many different versions of The Mitten. We picked an animal out of a mitten to research, and we researched and wrote about that animal. We made informational talking videos (I hope you enjoyed them!), and we even wrote our own version of The Mitten. Here is a shortened version of our story...
Once upon a time there was a little boy named Phillip. His grandpa made him a pair of very warm red mittens. One snowy cold day he went to the forest to pick up sticks. Soon he got distracted and dropped one of his mittens in the frozen white snow. Along came many animals to make their way into the mitten. There was a bee, a newt, a grasshopper, a Red Breasted Nuthatch, an American Goldfinch, an Eastern Mole, a woodpecker, a Least Chipmunk, a Cardinal, a Blue Jay, a Pond Slider turtle, a Mourning Dove, a Brush Rabbit, a Tiger Salamander, a Robin, a Long Tailed Weasel, an American Crow, a raccoon, a coyote, and a Mountain Lion! It looked like ALL would be well, but suddenly the bee began to BUZZ! The coyote SCRATCHED! The crow PECKED! Everyone began to sneeze and the mitten began to POP! Out flew all the animals! Phillip came back to find a STRINGY red mitten! We performed this story for the Kindergarteners and our Reading Buddies. The middle part with the animals entering the mitten was more elaborate with impromptu dialogue by your children! We also did an Engineering and Design challenge to create a mitten that wouldn't get lost in the snow. Your children had colorful mittens full of ideas such as tracking devices, robotic legs, levers, etc! Information about our Valentine's Day can be found on "Sign Ups". A listing of our classmates was sent home in your child's folder this past week. Valentine's Day is also our Kids Heart Challenge Day. We will be doing the challenge in the afternoon. Information about this was sent home by Mrs. Winchell, our P.E. teacher. We are looking for rectangular empty tissue boxes. If you have any, please send them in by Wednesday! Reminder that if you are thinking of chaperoning our June trip, you must go through the Designated Volunteer process. Information on this can be found on our school's website and in the Thursday Bobcat News. |
