We ended our week with a design challenge. We used information that we have learned about trees to design an umbrella that won't blow down in the wind. Your children had some great ideas.
We are learning about The First Thanksgiving. On Friday we learned about Thanksgivings in different cultures, and then learned about the history of our first Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, we are having an all school Positive Behavior PEP Rally. Please have your child wear his/her RED class T-shirt. If you did not sign up for a conference, and you would like to chat, please email me directly, and we can find a time to meet. We ended our week by composting our decomposing pumpkin! We will begin our week by answering and conducting an investigation into "How can we grow a pumpkin in cold weather?"
This week we will focus on setting in both our reading and our writing. We will write and describe a place that we enjoy. We are learning to organize our writing by sequencing our key details. We are finishing up Unit 3 in math. We are becoming proficient with identifying and locating larger numbers! We are learning to solve addition and subtraction problems in many ways. We continue to learn to transition our bodies and minds for the jobs ahead. We take lots of movement breaks to get our bodies going and to get our bodies to slow down. We are learning how to move from times of activity, to times of quiet, and to be appropriate in our transitions. A letter went home about the PTA's Theme Basket Fundraiser. Our basket is Chocolate Lovers! Heather B. will be spearheading this for our class, so she will be updating you. This is an awesome fundraiser, that helps to provide enrichment activities for NBCS. If you have not yet signed up for a conference, there are still slots available. Please see my "Sign Ups" page. If these times do not work, please contact me directly so that we can work together to find a time to chat. Thank you families for your many donations! Your help with soft tissues, sanitizing wipes, etc. is very much appreciated! The Open House and Showcase was GREAT! Please send along a picture or two if you are able. The colder weather is coming, and I'd like to take a moment to review our cold weather routines. Children should have a jacket every day. When the snow begins, only students with boots, jackets, snowpants, hats, and mittens will be allowed to go beyond the tar. Children are expected to be able to get their own gear on and off. Zippers and tying are tricky, so please be sure to have your child practice this at home. Your child should have a pair of dry shoes to change into. If your child would like to keep an extra pair of shoes or hard soled slippers/moccasins/crocs here at school, they are welcome to do so. I'm hoping that this will cut down on the amount of slush and snow that comes into the classroom. We do a lot of floor activities, so a clean dry floor is always preferred. If your child keeps a pair of shoes here, they must have strong sole (no cloth slipper types). The shoe must be suitable to wear outside if we had a fire drill. I'm hoping this will help keep our floor and our kids clean and dry. This is not a must do, but please consider having your child keep a pair of shoes here for the winter months. If you choose to do this, please let me know, so I can guide your child on where to keep these. Your child will still need to pack sneakers for P.E. day. We have P.E. on Mondays. Our library day is on Wednesdays. We had quite a few children who were unable to pick out a new book. Please be sure that your child packs his/her library book on Wednesday. This week we will be reading and learning about jobs in our community. We will finish our "In November" writings as well. Hello Families,
Thank you again for all of the help with Halloween! This week we meet our artists and begin our residency. Our performance will be on Thursday. There was a yellow paper with all of the details that went home on Thursday. At the Open House portion, which will begin at 6 pm, I will have a conference sign up sheet. I hope to have an opportunity to share your child's progress. This week we are also wrapping up our first reading unit. In this unit, your children learned about main key details and back up key details. We are now trying to write texts of our own using main key details and back up key details. This week we will focus on modeling a favorite read, In November, and write In November books of our own. This week we will not have take home spelling words. We will be doing quite a bit of assessment here at school. We will be assessing our reading comprehension, phonics and spelling skills, and sight words. We continue to work on identifying how our bodies and brains are feeling and learning to ready ourselves for learning. We are learning that when we focus on keeping our own bodies "in tune" it helps not only ourselves, but the people around us. Everyone benefits. |
