Tomorrow we will walk to the Food Pantry to deliver our donations. Our class has donated over 100 items. Thank you for your thoughtfulness! It will be a snowy walk, so please make sure your child is prepared with snow gear.
This week we will be continuing to work on our newly acquired long vowel sound skills. We will NOT have any new spelling words this week, and we will not have a spelling assessment. We enjoyed reading plays last week, and this week, we will work on a reading another play. We will also be learning about Winter and the Winter Solstice. This learning will tie in all that we have learned about the sun, directions, shadows, and seasons. As a reminder, we will be doing a card exchange this week. The kids should bring their cards in on Thursday. Thursday will also be pajama day and a special snack party. Please see last week's post for more details! Our Community Food Drive is well underway. Thank you so much for your contributions. We have a few more days to go! The kids are enjoying sorting and tallying the items!
The Food Pantry let us know that they are also in need of a few things that were not listed. They are as follows: pickles, shelf-stable bacon, fruit juices (plastic bottles), canned ham (small cans, like tuna cans)! Thank you for all that you are doing! This week we will continue to explore the long vowel patterns. This week it's long i. At this point, I am looking to see application of the short vowel patterns in their reading and their writing. The kids are doing a good job understanding how the "e" will change the sound from short to long! We will continue to learn about the sun. Last week we investigated shadows, and this week we will continue this by exploring how the sun appears to be in different parts of the sky throughout the day. We will be having a special event on Thursday, December 23rd. That day will be a special SNACK (I will send the Sign Up Genius in a separate email.) Children are also invited to wear their pajamas, bring a special blanket and/or stuffed animal, and a favorite book or two! We will spend the morning reading and having several guest readers in to read to us as well! We will also be having a special CARD Exchange. If your child would like to participate, they just need to bring in a card for each student in the classroom. This can be store bought or homemade. They should write a special positive comment in each card OR Draw a special picture for each child. (I will send a class list in a separate email too!) We will have Forest School this Friday too! This week we will explore deciduous and evergreen trees! The kids are learning so much during the week and applying it to their outdoor learning! Families, additionally I would like to thank all of you for your wonderful kids. The Teamwork Tigers are a great bunch, and they truly work together to achieve and create! Thank you for all of your support. They are doing a great job with their monthly SEESAW homework, and their at-home IXL! We are learning about maps and our place in the world. Your child came home with a paper today to practice learning their continent, country, state, and community/town. Next week we will continue to learn this, and it is tricky.
We have a song we use to help them with this. It goes like this... I live in North America, it's the continent for me. I live in the Unites States, it's my country and it's free. I live in the state of New Hampshire, but where ever I may roam. I'll always come back to my community, New Boston is my home. We had fun making a Compass Rose. Be sure to ask your child to show you this and to explain it to you. Next week, it is all about time. We will be working on understanding the concept of time, learning about how we can use the sun to tell time, and we'll even make a sun dial or two.! We will be starting to focus on long vowel patterns. Next week it the a_e pattern. We will work on discriminating between the short and long sound. Our spelling words will focus on this pattern too. We do a lot during the week with these patterns. We read and write them often. We use magnet boards to make these patterns, we search for them in our reading, and we make them with play-doh and other objects. Even with all of this work, these new patterns are tricky. Please practice these patterns for a few minutes each evening. We have been working with IXL at school, and the kids are now ready to use this at home if they choose to do so. Their password information will come home on Monday with a letter about the program. Please keep this information in a safe place, as we may need to use it should we have a Remote Snow day. Lastly, our food drive is in full swing. We are categorizing and tallying the goods that come in. Thanks for your help with this! If you have not yet sent in the permission slip, please send it in next week. |
