We begin a unit on animal features this week!
We are wrapping up our current math unit. We will have a math check in/assessment on Friday. Last week a sunflower went home and today your child's pumpkin went home. (A couple of them are still left in the window and will go home tomorrow.) They aren't quite ready to head outside to be planted, but when the soil warms up, they will be good to go! We will recognize EARTH DAY on April 22nd. On that day and on every day, we will be spending a lot of time outside. Please have your child dress in layers. I wrote this morning that we will now have a special on Friday as well. This week will be our last week of P.E. (Mon./Tues./Fri.). We will then be having ART for 4 weeks. Our library books can stay at home until after vacation, or your child is welcome to bring them back early. New books will not be going home until after vacation. The class did a great job with their 4 day return to school.
We are solidifying our ability to tell time to the hour and to the half hour. We are learning to add three numbers, and using our understanding of 10 as a strategy. We are also working on using our doubles facts to solve other math facts! During Social Studies and Literacy time, we learned about life long ago. Our science work was on sound, and next week we will learn about light. Please see the post below this one for details on what your child will need by Tuesday of this week. We will begin a new unit on producers and consumers. We will learn about where our food comes from. We will be spending more time outside, as our science work will take us outside to use our senses to discover. We will be planting too! Please be sure to have your child come prepared for outside learning each day! Comfortable layers and comfortable walking shoes are encouraged. Please be sure to pack water for your child daily, as well as an extra mask or two. We will return to a five day school week starting April 19th! Science Materials Needed for Next Week…
Hello Families, We have a science activity coming up in which kids will be sorting materials. Because of safety protocols, I would like each child to gather these materials and bring them to class by TUESDAY. Your child does not need to bring in all of these materials but should have a variety of items that fit these categories. Please keep the items small. For example: The cardboard could be a small piece…not a whole box.
All items should be able to fit in a plastic or paper shopping bag. I have enjoyed and been moved by the children's responses to their thoughts on coming back to school for four days. I am so proud of them for all of the work they have done both during in school and at home learning!
Monday will be a spirit day here at school. If your child would like to do so, please have your child dress in blue and/or yellow (our school colors) AND/OR wear NBCS apparel. Please be sure to read over the information that was sent home from Ms. Underwood regarding the four day week. If you are picking up your child, please be sure to put your sign in the passenger window. If your drop off plan has changed, and you have not yet contacted me, please be sure to let me know. Also, next Friday and for Fridays moving forward, I would like to change our ZOOM time to 9:00. Please let me know if this will be an issue for your family. Next week we will continue to learn about life long ago! This is such a fun unit to do with the kids. They take a big interest in the past and how things have changed. We will begin a new writing this week based on a very BIG word. POTENTIAL. The kids will learn how everything and everyone has potential. We will then write about the potential in every day objects. This is a BIG idea for first graders, and their ideas and reflections will be BIG too! Potential will play into our science unit as well. We will be learning about sound, and how objects have the potential for sound. We will learn about vibrations and comparing and contrasting soft and low sounds. During math, we will be revisiting time to the hour and really focusing on time to the half hour. We will be working on our addition and subtraction fluency too. |
