This week we will learn about the stars. This will conclude our study of the daytime and nightime sky.
Our Social Studies focus will be on life long ago. We will compare and contrast life long ago to life today. We will look at homes, schools, transportation, and clothing of long ago, and compare it to the present day. We are reading, reading, and reading! We are responding to our reading using detailed and accurate sentences and pictures. We will focus on long vowel spellings of o, u, and e this week. During math time, we are adding three addends. We are working on identifying and ordering large numbers. We are also working on graphing. Our Amaryllis plant continues to grow and bloom just like your children! They are eager, kind, and fun learners! WE made this poster today using our computer. WE worked as a group to decide on the pictures, the colors, the borders, and the message. Together, we are better! Reading fluency is a central focus, and last week we used plays to practice this. Fluency is the ability to read at an appropriate pace, using correct pausing, and reading expressively.
We had a Reader's Theatre week and used different folk tales to practice reading fluently. The children are excited about our Moon Study. This is a special Full Moon. It is called the Super Blood Wolf Moon. We continue to track the moon in class, and the children are able to recognize the different phases. In math, we have started our scrolling project. This challenges the students to sequence numbers past 100. We are focusing on correct sequencing, correct number formation, number identification, and perseverance. Later this week we will put together our scrolls and measure them. During Social Studies we are learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Last week we made peace doves and read the book, Happy Birthday, Dr. King with our reading buddies. Many people have asked if our class is in need of anything. Thank you for all the donations that you provide us. We are always in need of sanitizing wipes and soft tissues. In addition, occasionally children forget their spoon, fork, or snack. Our supply of these items is dwindling, so if you would like to donate a box of spoons, a box of forks, and/or a nut free box of crackers or other snack, that would be appreciated. Looking forward to a great week. I hope you have enjoyed a great, and quite chilly, weekend.
Our PTA Theme Basket fundraiser is coming to a close. If you have any items to contribute, please bring them to school in the early part of this week. Here is a link to the Sign Up Genius. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e49abaf2cabf58-restock If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Pliakos. Thank you to all for contributing to the PTA basket, and thank you Sarah for coordinating this! I hope your child showed you his/her Sundial. As part of our study about changes over time, we made and tested our Sundials. Your child should be able to tell and show you how it works! Next week we will continue with this study. Our spelling and word study focus will be to continue to recognize the differences between the long and short vowel sounds. During math, we will continue to compare numbers. This includes taking two number sentences and comparing their answers. For example deciding if 9+3 is greater or less than 8-2. Your children are learning to problem solve and to break down multi-step problems. I received notice this afternoon that Friday will be Patriots Spirit Day at NBCS. All are invited to wear Patriots gear or colors or the gear or colors of their favorite sports team. We've had a busy week observing changes over time. Moon Logs are due tomorrow. Our weather made it difficult for outdoor moon viewing, but hopefully the online moon calendars helped. We enjoyed using cookies today to eat our way through the phases of the moon. It was fun to hear the kids saying things like, "Look, I have a waxing gibbous", or "I just ate the full moon!" Our Amaryllis is growing too! We are measuring it daily. Here are the BIG things we are working on for the month of January. *Sight Words (see my Sight Word tab) *Writing complete sentences and punctuating them properly. *Retelling details accurately *Reading and writing long vowel words and recognizing short and long vowel sounds. Discriminating between long and short vowel sounds are tricky, but they are growing! *Adding and subtracting to 20. *Adding and subtracting by 10's from any number. ex. 38-20 = *Writing numbers and letters properly *Recognizing numbers through 120 *Comparing numbers *Following two step directions *Working independently *Reading and retelling fiction and nonfiction Our theme for the next few weeks is Changes Over Time. This past week we discussed things that change quickly and things that change over time. We are observing and watching the growth of a giant Amaryllis! It grew an inch in one day.
We learned about shadows and experiemented with moving shadows. We answered the question, Can a statue's shadow move? We found out the answer is YES, and we learned how the sun appears to be moving, but it is really the earth. We will continue this next week by observing the moon. Your child will have an additional homework assignment to observe the moon for four evenings. The tracking sheet will come home on Monday. I encourage you to try to find a spot outside and a common time to observe the moon with your child. If this is not possible, there are many "Moon Calendars" available online. Observing the moon outside and then going online to "check" it on the calendar would really bring home the understanding for your child. Our regular homework routine will resume this week. This will include:
The children are having difficulty remembering to bring in their library books on Wednesday. Please be sure that your child has packed his/her library book for Wednesday. Your children are doing a great job with their goals. We ended our day Friday by discussing how we felt we were doing with our goals. Thank you for your support of your child's learning! |
