This week we will be reading and writing about Friends. We will be learning about Friends Around the World. Our Social Studies work will focus on learning about our flag and the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance. In Math, we will work on number line hops and using the number line and number grid as a strategy to add and subtract. Your child will be assigned work on IXL as well. I will have an instructional video going out on Monday to explain the next steps. Your child should spend about 15 minutes on each starred item. Your child will have about 4-6 starred recommendations each week. These do not need to be completed all at once, but should be stretched out throughout the week. BE ON THE LOOK OUT! I am encouraging more paper and pencil activities when I can. Hybrid Learners will have their Math Journal sent home on Thursday. That way, when assigned a math page, the children can work right in the journal, and you can upload a picture of the finished work. Please look for this journal on Thursday, and put it in a safe place for remote work days. I will also be sending home the next installment of Scholastic News and the work that will be assigned to them. Remote Learners, please plan for a materials pick up and return on Friday, November 6th. I will have new materials for the students, and would ask that the following be returned: Library books Leveled Readers: Except for the ones titled Friends Are Fun and WE Can Move! Next week is a big week of reviewing and applying what we have learned! Wow, your children have grown! During class, we will be working on showing what we know in both reading and math. We will be working on showing how we solve number stories, and we will be showing what we know about identifying key details in our reading and writing. Our SEESAW work will have many opportunities to review and show what we know too. On Monday, your child will be assigned the first step in IXL. This is an assessment to see their present levels. This will take a while...PLEASE, break this down into small chunks...10-15 minutes, and have your child complete it over the course of the week. It does not need to be completed in one sitting. The assessment will pick up where your child left off. Hybrid Learners I sent home the information on your child's USERNAME and PASSWORD in your child's folder on Thursday. Remote Learners, this was sent via e-mail on Wednesday. Important Happenings Next Week: Walking Field Trip: Hybrid Learners on Tuesday. Permission slips were sent home via e-mail on Wednesday and in folders on Thursday for those I did not receive. Halloween Parade: Remote Learners on Wednesday. (Please drop off at 9:30...I will wait out back. Children should have costumes on and masks must be worn. We will have a socially distanced snack together and then the parade. I will meet you out front for parent pick up. Details on driving route for parade are in the Bobcat News. Hybrid Learners on Thursday. Children should BRING their costumes, and label everything. Costumes should be easy to put on. Details on driving route for parade are in the Bobcat News. We will have some treats after the party. If you have volunteered for your child to bring in something, please send it in with your child that morning OR you may drop it off earlier in the week at the office. Additional FUN: The second installment of " Cooking with Mrs. Lamontagne will happen on Friday of this week! Mrs. Lamontagne will have a video lesson on SEESAW for your children! Here's what your child will need. half a graham cracker orange frosting small tootsie roll items to make pumpkin face; M&M's, candy corn, chocolate chips, etc. plate knife I'm looking forward to a fun week of learning and demonstrating growth...and of course...a bit of fun and treats too! We have been reading about pets. We have read about animals coming to school. Although we can't bring our pets to school, we CAN bring them to ZOOM school. On Friday, your child is invited to bring a pet to ZOOM school. No pet? That's okay. Your child can bring a stuffed animal OR draw a picture of a beloved former pet or a pet that your child would like to have!
Next week is Halloween. Please read about Halloween in a former post below. If you are able to bring in some pre-packaged treats, please let me know. There is a needed list in my Halloween post. Hybrid Learners will be taking a walking field trip on Tuesday. Please be sure to have permission slips (sent via email and a paper copy will go home tomorrow) in by Tuesday. We will visit the community scarecrow display. A great New Boston tradition! I have shared with you that we had a platform called IXL. This is a reading and math platform, that will help me to track your child's skill development. Next week, your child will take the Diagnostic Assessment. This can be quite lengthy, and it can be done over several sessions. Next week, I will have an assignment for it on SEESAW, but the information on how to access it will come home by week's end. (Hybrid Learners will get a hard copy. Remote learners will get the information via e-mail.) Please keep it handy. This past week your children began to work with our art teacher, Mrs. Chalson. During art, the students are creating a book all about themselves. Mrs. Chalson is working closely to integrate this book with our first reading unit: Getting to Know Us. The library book bags should come back this week for Hybrid Learners. Remote Learners may hold off on returning the bags until the end of the month. We will coordinate that with our next materials pick up and return time. (TBD). Families, I'd like to take a moment to talk about writing. Your children are working on developing their ideas. We are talking about how writers get their ideas from things they know or have experienced. Your children are learning to add key details to their writing. This shows up in their writing by going beyond the question. For instance. A response such as "I like New Boston." is a developing idea. "I like New Boston. The river is pretty." is an idea that is developing with a key detail. I have been so impressed with their efforts and their risk taking. Putting something down on paper is really HARD. As far as writing conventions go, I am looking to see that they are writing more than one word responses, and that they are attempting spelling by approximation. This means that they are sound-stretching words that are tricky. The word may not be accurate, but it is approximate. This gives me BIG insight into what they know as developing readers and writers. I know, that it may be hard to have your child turn in a journal with inaccurate spelling, but please trust me, during this free journal writing time, this is appropriate and necessary. Your child has lots of opportunities to practice accuracy. The Your Turn Practice book is a place to attempt accuracy on the patterned words and the irregularly spelled sight words. When your child is working on one sentence responses in the Your Turn book, it is appropriate to encourage accuracy on the patterned words and sight words, and to encourage capitals and periods. This is the practice time, and pretty soon, we will see it appear in their every day writing. During math this week, we are continuing to work with our fluency in identifying when we add and when we subtract. We are also working on the patterns in our hundreds chart. We are beginning to notice that when we use our hundreds chart, our counts always land in the same columns and will always end in either a 5 or a 0. I mentioned that a new platform, IXL will soon be coming our way. Administration is still working out the details for grade 1 programming. I hope to have news on this platform out to you next week. Families, your children are showing effort and pride in their accomplishments! Thank you for your work on your end. You are an integral part of their success, and YOU are greatly appreciated. (Our Halloween Parade will look different this year. Please check out the Thursday Bobcat News for full details.
Here is the information that is pertinent to our class. The tentative dates and times are as follows: Wednesday October 28th for Cohort A at 9:45-10:05 (Remote Learners) Thursday, October 29th for Cohort B at 9:45-10:05 (Hybrid Learners) The children will be lining up all around the back of the school building in their costumes. Parents can send in a costume for their child(ren) to wear but they must be able to put their costume on independently. Please be sure that everything is labeled. Please avoid accessories such as brooms, wands, etc. We will be having a small celebration in their classroom with pre-packaged snacks and an activity. If the weather is inclement and the parade has to be cancelled it will not be re-scheduled. The party and activity, however, will go on! If you are able to help by sending in a pre-packaged/individually wrapped snacks or drinks, please let me know. Here's what I think we will need. ~ 1 dozen juice boxes (avoid apple please) (These have been volunteered) ~ 1 dozen small water bottles (These have been volunteered) ~ 1 dozen individually wrapped snack cakes (Halloween themed would be great.) (These have been volunteered.) ~ 1 dozen pre-packaged fruit snacks (These have been volunteered) If you are able to send in one of these items, please let me know. As I receive confirmations on items being sent in, I will update the above list. Hello Families,
Your children continue to do a fantastic job! They are learning and growing. This week we will be reading and writing about where we live. We will define the words "city" and "country" and apply this knowledge to define where we live. During math time, we will be breaking down addition and subtraction by using the statements: "Change to more..." and "Change to less". We are also continuing to work on our "hopping" on the number line and number grid. One common error is that students will forget to hop forward or backwards when counting their first hop. They stay on a number and count that number as their first hop. When a student does this, the answer will be off by 1. We are also continuing to work on counting on from a number. We do this as well with our counting by 5 pattern. Soon, we will work through this with the 2s pattern. This week we will begin a science unit on animals and how some of their abilities are pretty amazing! It is almost as if they have Super Powers! The kids are doing a great job with their remote work too! Thank you for this! Although the work is uploaded to SEESAW digitally, I am trying to make many of the assignments "printable". The math journal page is one of these. Remote Learners will have this right in their Math Journal book to do, but for Hybrid Learners, if you can, printing it will be easier. I know that it may be different on some devices, but usually, if you click on the 3 dots, there is a "print activity" option. As far as digital programs go, students have received their Wonders and EveryDay Mathematics password cards. I have been assigning some of the games and books from these sites. This is also a great place to go to enrich and challenge. The Wonders site will have the books that we are reading together. Re-reading these books will help your child to become a proficient and fluent reader. The math site will mirror the lessons we are doing, so your child can go there to review the lesson and practice further. We have one more digital program coming. This is called IXL. Our technology team is currently working to get this up and ready for first graders. You should expect to see a letter from me with information about this later in the week or early next. Thank you for this wonderful group of Shining Super Stars! Today, the butterflies happened! I was so hoping that they would emerge during a time that the kids were present either via ZOOM or in the classroom. I posted a video for the kids on SEESAW.
Next week, we will begin our first reading unit. We will be focusing on the things that we do at school. We will have a new journal routine as well. Next week on SEESAW, you will see a journal. The students will write daily, whether it is in school with me or during their remote day. On Friday, students will choose an entry from the week to submit to SEESAW. This week, the writing focus will be on developing a writing idea! Spelling will begin this week, but assessing spelling in a hybrid/remote learning environment will look different. I will be looking for the application of our learned patterns within their daily writing activities and within their journal. All students have received their Wonders/Everyday Math password card. The children will need this to access some material on their remote learning days. Have a wonderful weekend! |
