This past week your children began to work with our art teacher, Mrs. Chalson. During art, the students are creating a book all about themselves. Mrs. Chalson is working closely to integrate this book with our first reading unit: Getting to Know Us. The library book bags should come back this week for Hybrid Learners. Remote Learners may hold off on returning the bags until the end of the month. We will coordinate that with our next materials pick up and return time. (TBD). Families, I'd like to take a moment to talk about writing. Your children are working on developing their ideas. We are talking about how writers get their ideas from things they know or have experienced. Your children are learning to add key details to their writing. This shows up in their writing by going beyond the question. For instance. A response such as "I like New Boston." is a developing idea. "I like New Boston. The river is pretty." is an idea that is developing with a key detail. I have been so impressed with their efforts and their risk taking. Putting something down on paper is really HARD. As far as writing conventions go, I am looking to see that they are writing more than one word responses, and that they are attempting spelling by approximation. This means that they are sound-stretching words that are tricky. The word may not be accurate, but it is approximate. This gives me BIG insight into what they know as developing readers and writers. I know, that it may be hard to have your child turn in a journal with inaccurate spelling, but please trust me, during this free journal writing time, this is appropriate and necessary. Your child has lots of opportunities to practice accuracy. The Your Turn Practice book is a place to attempt accuracy on the patterned words and the irregularly spelled sight words. When your child is working on one sentence responses in the Your Turn book, it is appropriate to encourage accuracy on the patterned words and sight words, and to encourage capitals and periods. This is the practice time, and pretty soon, we will see it appear in their every day writing. During math this week, we are continuing to work with our fluency in identifying when we add and when we subtract. We are also working on the patterns in our hundreds chart. We are beginning to notice that when we use our hundreds chart, our counts always land in the same columns and will always end in either a 5 or a 0. I mentioned that a new platform, IXL will soon be coming our way. Administration is still working out the details for grade 1 programming. I hope to have news on this platform out to you next week. Families, your children are showing effort and pride in their accomplishments! Thank you for your work on your end. You are an integral part of their success, and YOU are greatly appreciated.
