This week we will begin our second unit in Reading. Our focus this week is on jobs in the community. We will be reading and writing about jobs we might like to have and those jobs we might not like to have.
Our decoding and spelling work will focus on the short e sound. Our comprehension work will be to identify characters, settings, and events in fictional stories. During math, we are completing our third unit. We are working on finding those patterns on our hundreds chart! We are adding and subtracting using our Frames and Arrows diagrams. The kids are doing a good job with these! I am looking forward to a terrific week. Hello Families,
I am wishing you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving! As our class is discussing Gratitude, I want to make sure you know how appreciated you are. This school year is far from typical, and your efforts and skills in supporting your children with our lesson extensions is so very appreciated! This last week has been a bit difficult as we hear of increased cases and that our school has been affected. I want to let you know that your children have been doing a remarkable job following our guidelines. I am so very proud of them. Ms. Underwood has shared a letter today with you regarding what may happen if we need to go remote. Should this happen, Full Remote students will follow their regular schedule. Hybrid Learners will follow a ZOOM schedule that somewhat mirrors our classroom day. I have posted a draft of that schedule on my Daily Schedules page. Please take the time this week to enjoy family and know that you are greatly appreciated. Hello Families, Wow! Your children are developing as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists! I am very proud of their efforts! Last week was a week of WOW writing moments. Your children are understanding a writing idea and how to stay on that topic and develop it with key details. This week, we will be publishing our In November books! These will come home the week of Thanksgiving. In math we are learning to show our work and to explain our thinking. Your children are often asked to verbalize how they got their answer, or to explain how they might know what number will come next in a pattern, etc. Showing hops on the number line is one of these expectations. I have shown them the DOT, HOP, ARROW strategy. This means, they put a big dot on the spot that they are starting, they show their hops, and the arrow points to the number that they have landed on. The arrow is significant because it will show the direction that they are moving and indicates addition or subtraction. We do this on our simplified problems, so that we know how to use the strategy on more difficult problems. This week, that strategy will be applied with some tricky new learning. Your child will be introduced to Frames and Arrow Diagrams. Here is some information for you: These diagrams are used throughout the year, and children will begin by having a rule to follow, then they will have to determine the rule. Later in the year, they will have to reverse the rule to find missing pieces in the frame! This week is a Literacy Assessment week. We will be re-reading stories from the past unit, and we will be completing the Unit 1 Literacy Assessment. This Friday another cooking activity will be posted. This is an optional activity. Here is a message from Mrs. Lamontagne... Hello Everyone! Are you ready for another cooking activity? The items you will need for this week's cooking activity are: toothpicks fruit loops mini round donuts ex. hostess candy eyes or anything else you can use for eyes ex. chocolate chips, M&M's, raisins Happy Thanksgiving, Mrs. Lamontagne I wanted to take a moment to talk about IXL. The SUGGESTIONS FROM the TEACHER section is the most important component to complete. These assignments reflect the learning that we are doing in school, but are different for each child based on their needs.
IXL then has recommendations for your child based on the work done on the Diagnostic Assessment. This area may include activities for remediation and activities for enrichment. Please encourage your child to complete some of these after the suggestions from me have been completed. Families, thank you for your continued efforts with the at-home learning piece. I know that this is not an ideal situation, and I appreciate all of your efforts in making this work. YOU are appreciated. If you have not yet had a conference with me, and you would like to, please reach out, and we can find a time to meet. I hope you have had a wonderful weekend rich with family and fun!
This week, our Social Studies work will focus on Veteran's Day. Our reading unit this week is all about MOVING! We will learn about how animals move and how we can move too! During our school day we take lots of movement breaks. This helps us to get our bodies into the GREEN ZONE. The zone for optimum learning. We often pair this movement up with a learning opportunity such as counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s. Our math work will focus on visualizing counts by 2s, 5s, and 10s on the Number Line, the Hundreds Chart, and eventually, in our minds! New material has been sent home that will hopefully help with at home paper pencil tasks and less of a need to print off o SEESAW. From time to time that will be necessary though. Your child received a ZOOM Book and a Ladybug Memory book. These materials should come to ZOOM every Friday. Your child should also have a pencil, an eraser, and some crayons. We will be using these materials for more active engagement, and also as a check-in on concepts that we have learned. I'm enjoying our conferences. If you have not yet signed up, please see the post...it's 2 below this one. There are still dates available, and of course, we can always schedule a different time too. With just 1 official day of assigned work so far in IXL, we have accomplished the first goal of answering 500 questions.
As a reminder, your child should spend about 15 minutes in each starred TEACHER suggestion. I know that there are many options to this program, but for now, I would like them to stick to just the STARRED TEACHER suggestions. Your child may not need 15 minutes in each area, our goal is to get a "Smart Score" of 80 or higher. If it takes your child less time to reach 80, that is okay...but they may want to try to go further. The max score is 100. If your child is taking longer than 15 minutes for any one starred item, please have them stop, and take a break. They can revisit on another day, and it will pick up where your child left off. Time spent on ALL IXL starred assignments should add up to approximately one hour to an hour and 15 minutes per week. The Diagnostic Arena is also starred. For this week, the children can go in their as an option. Moving forward, they should spend only about 5-10 minutes per week in the Diagnostic Arena. Congratulations to your kids for a GREAT START! |
