Report Cards went home today.
Also in the folder is a sign for student pick-up. The school is asking that families use this sign or a large sign with the same information as the one in the folder. This will be very helpful as we move to more cars in the pick-up line. It will also be helpful should there ever be a substitute teacher who wouldn't be familiar with each car. Please let me know if your child's pick up routine will change now that we have a 4 day in person week. If your child will now be taking a bus home, please let me know the bus number and plan. As a reminder, please order school lunch ahead of time. We had a few mix ups today that lead to a bit of a later lunch for a couple of students, and a little bit of running for the kitchen staff. I am very excited to have the kids in school for more days! They are a wonderful bunch of fun learners! Hello Families,
The class has been working on writing their thoughts on When Spring Comes. The stories are going to be displayed as a Story Walk outside at the school. The walk will be open for families after school on Thursday (after 2:10 or the last bus rolls out) through Friday, March 26th at 3:00 pm. The stories will be displayed on the side of the school above the white fenced play area. If you would like to view this with your child on Thursday after school, please let me know, and I will be happy to keep your child in the classroom. I can then walk your child down to meet you at the Story Walk area once dismissal is over and the area is traffic free. Please park in the front of the school and wait until the buses have left before heading to the area. Please wear a mask too. Here's a preview... We are finishing up our When Spring Comes Story Walk. I will send details mid-week as to where you can stop by to view the class's fantastic writing.
We are working on adding two digit numbers. We are working on showing how we can solve who has more, who has less number problems. We are also becoming proficient in identifying and explaining odd and even numbers. As we move closer to our 4 day in person school week, there are some things that may help the transition to go smoothly. School Lunch ~ If your child is ordering school lunch, please be sure to order it ahead of time. The school kitchen will now be producing double the amount of lunches daily. Each morning, the kitchen sends me a list of those receiving school lunch that day. Often times there are students who tell me that they are school lunch, but their family forgot to order. This then involves a phone call, and an interruption to our day to get the order straightened out with the kitchen. Forgets happen, but if we can limit this, it will be less confusing for both the classroom and the kitchen. End of Day Pick Up~ Although our classroom size is staying stable for now, the amount of cars coming to pick up children will be doubling. Although I am pretty familiar with most cars now, it would be helpful if all pick up families would put a sign in their window clearly stating your child's last name, my last name, and Door #5. This will help me to get your child to the door quickly, and keep the pick up line moving. I anticipate that more cars will make the pick up longer, so the sign will help to move things along! Your Turn Practice Books ~ If you have not yet done so, please return your child's Your Turn Practice book to school on Tuesday. Have a wonderful weekend! This week we will begin a reading unit on folk and fairy tales! We will read another version of The Mitten, and then compare it to the ones we read earlier in February.
On SEESAW tomorrow, your child's journal will look different. This week it will incorporate writing with Science, Technology, Art, and Math! On Monday, your child will be asked to create a leprechaun trap. They may use any materials that they have on hand and that are okayed by YOU. The traps will stay at home, as they will not be in class on the day the leprechaun visits. On Wednesday, they will be asked to write and share what happened. Did they trap a leprechaun? Did the leprechaun raise a ruckus! During our in-class days, we will share pictures and stories about what happened. Please be sure to post pictures via SEESAW, and we will share them when we are all together. Our math this week will focus on connecting our understanding of the Hundreds Chart to adding larger two digit numbers. You may have heard that we will be moving to a 4 day in person classroom schedule! If you have not yet filled out the survey that the school sent out on Friday, please do so by Wednesday. I am looking forward to the opportunity to have them here for four days a week! Another big step towards a return to normal. Tomorrow, we will start an Iditaread Reading Challenge. We will learn about the Iditarod and read our way through the month of March.
Tomorrow is also wearable words day. Children are invited to wear words. This can be a shirt or article of clothing with words already on it...Star Wars, Gap, Be Kind, etc. OR kids can make their own words and tape them on their clothing. Friday is career day, and the kids are welcome to come dressed as their future career. Most of the activities seem self-explanatory. Two tricky ones are WOW words. The premise is can you use good word choices to write about your favorite book? Bookface is as follows: What is a Book Face? Bookface involves strategically lining up your face or body alongside a book cover that features a matching body part so that there appears to be a melding of life and art. Photographs must be original material and taken by participant. Creativity is strongly encouraged. Photographs must be school appropriate. Your child may submit your photo electronically to me, and then I will send it along to the coordinator of the event. On Friday and the following Monday, I would like to meet with each child individually for a remote reading check-in. We will have our usual class ZOOM, but then throughout the day I would like to have an opportunity to read with your child. The times are as follows. If you could email me back with 2 times that may work, I will put a schedule together and then get back to you with the time for your child's appointment. Friday 3/12 9:30-9:50 9:55-10:15 10:20-10:40 10:45-11:05 11:10-11:30 11:30-11:50 12:10- 12:30 12:35-12:55 1:00-1:20 1:25-1:45 1:45-2:05 Monday 3/15 1:30-1:50 1:55-2:05 2:10-2:30 This week we continue to focus on our long vowel i pattern. We will continue to read plays about planting and plants. This week's read is about a giant plant called a Yuca. It is so big that the whole family and even the animals join in to help pull it out of the ground!
During math time, we are working on our number scrolls. Children are recognizing that there is a repeating pattern to the numbers and the hundreds chart. Typically, a first grader will initially write numbers in the 100s like this...for 101, they may write 1001. For 111 they may write 10011. They are now using what they know about place value to write these numbers with accuracy! Our SEESAW focus this week will be on the long vowel i pattern, mixed practice in previously taught math and literacy skills, and on writing with description. Please encourage your child to write three or more descriptive and detailed sentences for their journal. Pictures are expected to be detailed too! On Thursday, we will begin a new in-class writing project. We will be writing our thoughts about SPRING. It is my hope that we will be able to create a "STORY WALK" with these writings. More details will follow! Tuesday is a no school day for students. It is a teacher workshop day. |
