Hello Families, Happy New Year! I am looking forward to seeing the Best Bobcats class! We will begin our year with some educational goal setting. Think New Year's Resolutions for the classroom. I'd like your help with this, and I'm asking each child to come prepared on Wednesday with a learning goal for the month of January. I'd like each child to have it written down and ready for Wednesday morning. Please have a conversation with your child about what he/she would like to accomplish by the end of January. Here are some ideas that may help you and your child. Your child should choose one thing to be his/her goal. Yes, we will have many other accomplishments, but this should be the BIG thing. These are EXAMPLES, and you and your child may find that he/she has a different goal. That is a-ok. Your child's goal should start with the following words... By the end of January, I would like to...
I'm looking forward to reading these goals with your child on Wednesday. This week we will be reviewing familiar texts. We will be reviewing finding text evidence in our stories. We will be practicing some of our consonant blend patterns. There will not be homework this week, except for the goal assignment that is due on Wednesday. The weather forecast looks like a very rainy Friday. We have decided to take our walking field trip to the Food Pantry tomorrow, December 20th.
Please make sure of the following:
Winter is coming, winter is coming...shortest day...longest night.
Your child will learn about winter and seasonal changes this week. We will celebrate the first day of winter on December 21st, with our Winter Craft and Breakfast Party. The school will be joining in on the fun with our first spirit day. We are being asked to dress as a favorite winter character. Wear pjs and be a kid on the polar express, Old Man Winter, Frosty...The possibilities are endless! I hope many of us join in on the fun! Friday is also the day that we will bring our collected goods to the New Boston Food Pantry. Please be sure to return the signed permission slip. Our class has specific items that they are in need of, and please be sure to follow this list. I also wanted to clarify that the canned hams should be "shelf-stable" hams. This means that they can last on a shelf without refrigeration. Sorry for the confusion. Please check the labels. Report cards went out on Friday. Only the envelope needs to be returned. The report card may stay at home. Last week, we read stories about characters who helped their communities in different ways. We are writing our own helping stories too.
We want to help our community too. I will be talking to the students more about our annual Food Drive to support the New Boston Food Pantry. More information and a permission slip will come home later this week. This week we will continue our unit on measuring using non-standard units. We are learning to measure using items such as paper clips and cubes. We are learning to measure from end to end, to not gap and to not overlap. We are learning that it is important to use the same unit and not use units of different size. We are using language such as a "bit shorter" and a "bit wider". We will also be learning about mapping. I am hoping to get another science walk in this week. Please be sure that your children are prepared each day with the proper gear. If the conditions are right, we will be heading out to observe and identify different conifer trees. I'm looking forward to a GREAT week! |
