Today, your child will read a fun and familiar story, Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type. Duck is a familiar character, and we have read several stories in this series throughout the year! Your child may be interested in reading other stories by this author, here is a link that will take you to more books by this author. (Sadly, the books in the Click, Clack series are not offered.) Mrs. Charles sent out this resource link. Besides books by this author, your child may find books of interest and of challenge to read and enjoy here. https://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/Result.aspx?m=Author&key=Cronin In today's ZOOM we will be reading Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type. We will then use story clues to decide upon the theme or themes of the story! We will do some work with graphing as well. The kids are doing an amazing job participating in their ZOOM learning! They are learning to work with focus and to participate positively. One thing I'd like you to help with if you are coming to my daily 10:00 Zoom Sessions. Since there are a larger number of kids, I am asking that parents help your child to PIN me at the start of the ZOOM. You can do this by clicking on my image and clicking "PIN video". That way, they will see me in a larger view. This will help them to better see my instructional materials. THANK YOU! This will only be for my 10:00 instructional ZOOMS. We will not do the PIN option during whole group ZOOM. As always, please reach out if your child is in need of additional learning times outside of my scheduled ZOOMs. Have a wonderful day! Today, your child will be reading about working together!
Our math work today will focus on reviewing time to the hour and to the half-hour. Many students are really getting this concept. One of the biggest things to remember and to remind them is that when telling time past the hour, the hour hand is always past the number that the hour names. For instance, if you see the hour hand is past the 8, and the big hand is on the 6, it must be 8:30 or half-past 8 o'clock. It wouldn't be 9:30, because the hour hand has not gone past the 9. In today's ZOOM, I will be doing the reading portion of their assignment to read The Day the Crayons Quit. We will work together to identify the theme by using clues. The students will then be responsible for completing the student response independently. I will also be working with this week's spelling pattern and reviewing time. The students are doing a great job with our Bobcat ZOOM rules. We discussed yesterday being "whole body listeners". This means that we are coming to our ZOOM time prepared to work. Our body and brain are in the GREEN zone (calm, focused, ready to learn). We are ready to be listeners and participators. This means that I have asked students to not be on MUTE. This means that they have to be much more quiet, and background noise should be at a minimum. They are doing a good job with this new challenge! As always, if your child needs support outside of our scheduled ZOOM times, I am happy to do that. Have a wonderful day! Hello Families,
I hope your weekend was a restful one full of family time and celebrations. This week we begin a new unit in our reading program. The theme is about how we can work together to make our lives better. In this time of quarantining and being apart in order to help each other, this unit takes on a lot more meaning than usual. The reading in this unit takes a big leap in story understanding. Children will be working to understand the theme or the BIG idea in the story. This is a very tricky thing, and really BIG first grade work. My ZOOM office times will focus on helping students to find the theme in the story. In today's ZOOM, we will first work on reading today's story, SUPER TOOLS. We will work to identify the theme together. Children who attend my ZOOM will then be ready to complete today's TO DO work on writing the theme of the story. My ZOOM time today will end with some review of FACT FAMILIES. Happy Friday Families,
Wow, we have quite the designers! Your children put their critical thinking and creativity into their projects. This week I saw their growth in their thinking process through their presentations. The children used thoughtful details when sharing their work. They spoke thoughtfully about what they might change and how they could make improvements. In today's ZOOM we will be do a quick shape activity. For this activity, please have your child come prepared with these words written out on separate pieces of paper: cube sphere cylinder rectangular prism (the kids will be holding the cards up, so please have the writing be large and bold to help my eyes. :] ) Mrs. Limondin will visit with us too. We will end with a birthday recognition. Have a wonderful weekend! It has been so enjoyable to listen to the boat presentations and to read their journals. Those boats are taking them to places real such as Antarctica, Alaska, Australia, France, Maine, islands and Florida and to places imagines such as underwater cities and islands where mermaids and dinosaurs live.
Today, your child has a reading fluency check-in. Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, clearly, and at an appropriate rate. (Not too choppy and not too fast). It will also measure your child's ability to self-correct when meaning breaks down. The passages are short. Your child should practice the passage a few times before adding a response. It is important that the reading shows their independent abilities. Today's math lesson is an extension of yesterday's. In my ZOOM time today, I will do a quick review of the lesson with added focus today on recognizing faces and vertices within 3D shapes. We will read another Three Billy Goats Gruff story as well. Tomorrow's ZOOM is a whole class ZOOM. Mrs. Limondin, our school nurse, will be visiting us tomorrow to talk about being safe and hand washing. Tomorrow is also a school-wide spirit day. It is Dress Like A Teacher / Dress Like a Student Day. I'll be trying my best to dress like a first grader! This book was suggested by Mrs. Charles, and I am putting it here for you as a resource if you are looking for something to help your child with understanding our current situation. https://wpg-assets.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/pdf/coronavirus.pdf Assignments for today have been posted.
Yesterday your child read about bridges and today they will be challenged to build a bridge for an animal. Maybe the bridge spans a body of water. Maybe their boat floats underneath it! In today's ZOOM, I will be teaching today's math lesson. Your child will be responsible for working on the cube activity and XtraMath independently. We will also be working on using Sight Words in context and reading a traditional version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. If your child is attending the ZOOM, please go over our expected ZOOM behaviors:
We have some terrific boat builders out there. I am enjoying hearing the designers/builders discuss their boats and how many pennies the boats can hold! We have some very strong boats!
Today's math work will review fractions. The lesson can stand alone without having to visit the EveryDay math page. I did include the reference to the math site in the event that you want to review some fractions and utilize the Math Boxes and Home LInks for additional and optional practice. In today's Zoom time we will be looking at objects that are divided into equal parts. The students will be helping to identify the fraction. If your child has an object that is divided into equal parts, and your child would like to bring it to the ZOOM, please do so. Please have your child come prepared to the ZOOM with a writing utensil, something to write with, and be at a stable surface for working. Have a wonderful day! After our math work, we will read a Three Billy Goats Gruff story. This week is all about building! If we were in the classroom, we'd have a lot of excitement bubbling over building our boats and bridges. We'd have a lot of wet sleeves too!
This week your child's reading will teach them about building. We'll read about building boats, bridges, and yurts! Your child will have some design challenges to do as well. Perhaps the weather will continue to be as lovely as today, and some of that work can happen outside! Today's Zoom time will focus on today's math lesson. I will do the teaching portion of the lesson with the children. After the ZOOM, they will be responsible for completing the Math Box. We will do some work with our Sight Words in context and read about Rescue Boats. |
