We will be wrapping up our third reading unit and our fifth math unit. Next week will be a week of showing what we know through our reading, math, and writing assessments.
We will NOT have any new spelling words or a spelling test this week. In science we will be learning about why we see stars at night. We will have a fun book study on the Pete the Cat series too! We had 100 percent participation on our reading homework! Way to go Teamwork Tigers! This week we will be reading and learning about where our food comes from. We will be learning the words: goods, services, producers, and consumers. Our spelling test will be on FRIDAY of this week. This week, we will begin to have a homework assignment each Thursday. This is a READ to a grown up assignment. Your child will be bringing a book home that your child has practiced and is familiar with. The job is to share that book with a grown up. Be on the look out for this weekly assignment on Thursday. In math we are learning to add 3 numbers. We are practicing this by measuring and adding sides of objects. We continue to work on our addition and subtraction facts. Automatic recognition of a math fact to ten builds fluency and strength! Our supply of disinfectant wipes and soft tissues is dwindling. If you would like to donate to our class, we would appreciate these. Snowy weather is upon us. Please have your child bring appropriate gear for outdoor play. Friday Forest School is always in the plan. If the temperature and weather is reasonable, we will go out each Friday to apply our learned concepts. Last week's chilly temperatures provided an opportunity to create ice sculptures from natural objects. Be sure to ask your child what temperature water freezes at.
In the upcoming week, we will be learning about life long ago. We will be comparing it to life today, We will continue to work with place value, and we will be comparing numbers. The kids have done a good job with their first week of this. Next week, they will begin to produce greater than and less than number sentences. Please be sure to have your child place the completed Snow Day 1 Blizzard Bag materials in his/her folder. This work is due on Monday. Enjoy the snow. Welcome 2022!
This week we will be learning about Folk Tales. Our spelling will look a bit different this week, as we will have a different spelling pattern than a reading/phonics pattern. For spelling, we will be reviewing long a and long i. For reading, we will be working on reading words with a -dge ending pattern. In math, we are beginning a new unit. We will be working on understanding place value and comparing numbers up to 100. We will continue to work on adding and subtracting to 20. I would encourage you to use our EveryDay Math and IXL platforms for additional addition and subtraction practice. EveryDay math will provide game style format, and your child can access lessons and practice through IXL. I will also put a few addition and subtraction practice lessons up in SEESAW for the month of January. We will start off the new year by deciding on what our "ONE WORD" will be. I will be asking the kids to think about what word they would choose to help them have their BEST year ever. Would it be brave...kind...love...share...help...thank...smile? We will be brainstorming words on Monday and choosing our words too. Please feel free to discuss this with your child prior to Monday, this may help your child to have some prior knowledge. Looking forward to a fabulous 2022! Tomorrow we will walk to the Food Pantry to deliver our donations. Our class has donated over 100 items. Thank you for your thoughtfulness! It will be a snowy walk, so please make sure your child is prepared with snow gear.
This week we will be continuing to work on our newly acquired long vowel sound skills. We will NOT have any new spelling words this week, and we will not have a spelling assessment. We enjoyed reading plays last week, and this week, we will work on a reading another play. We will also be learning about Winter and the Winter Solstice. This learning will tie in all that we have learned about the sun, directions, shadows, and seasons. As a reminder, we will be doing a card exchange this week. The kids should bring their cards in on Thursday. Thursday will also be pajama day and a special snack party. Please see last week's post for more details! Our Community Food Drive is well underway. Thank you so much for your contributions. We have a few more days to go! The kids are enjoying sorting and tallying the items!
The Food Pantry let us know that they are also in need of a few things that were not listed. They are as follows: pickles, shelf-stable bacon, fruit juices (plastic bottles), canned ham (small cans, like tuna cans)! Thank you for all that you are doing! This week we will continue to explore the long vowel patterns. This week it's long i. At this point, I am looking to see application of the short vowel patterns in their reading and their writing. The kids are doing a good job understanding how the "e" will change the sound from short to long! We will continue to learn about the sun. Last week we investigated shadows, and this week we will continue this by exploring how the sun appears to be in different parts of the sky throughout the day. We will be having a special event on Thursday, December 23rd. That day will be a special SNACK (I will send the Sign Up Genius in a separate email.) Children are also invited to wear their pajamas, bring a special blanket and/or stuffed animal, and a favorite book or two! We will spend the morning reading and having several guest readers in to read to us as well! We will also be having a special CARD Exchange. If your child would like to participate, they just need to bring in a card for each student in the classroom. This can be store bought or homemade. They should write a special positive comment in each card OR Draw a special picture for each child. (I will send a class list in a separate email too!) We will have Forest School this Friday too! This week we will explore deciduous and evergreen trees! The kids are learning so much during the week and applying it to their outdoor learning! Families, additionally I would like to thank all of you for your wonderful kids. The Teamwork Tigers are a great bunch, and they truly work together to achieve and create! Thank you for all of your support. They are doing a great job with their monthly SEESAW homework, and their at-home IXL! We are learning about maps and our place in the world. Your child came home with a paper today to practice learning their continent, country, state, and community/town. Next week we will continue to learn this, and it is tricky.
We have a song we use to help them with this. It goes like this... I live in North America, it's the continent for me. I live in the Unites States, it's my country and it's free. I live in the state of New Hampshire, but where ever I may roam. I'll always come back to my community, New Boston is my home. We had fun making a Compass Rose. Be sure to ask your child to show you this and to explain it to you. Next week, it is all about time. We will be working on understanding the concept of time, learning about how we can use the sun to tell time, and we'll even make a sun dial or two.! We will be starting to focus on long vowel patterns. Next week it the a_e pattern. We will work on discriminating between the short and long sound. Our spelling words will focus on this pattern too. We do a lot during the week with these patterns. We read and write them often. We use magnet boards to make these patterns, we search for them in our reading, and we make them with play-doh and other objects. Even with all of this work, these new patterns are tricky. Please practice these patterns for a few minutes each evening. We have been working with IXL at school, and the kids are now ready to use this at home if they choose to do so. Their password information will come home on Monday with a letter about the program. Please keep this information in a safe place, as we may need to use it should we have a Remote Snow day. Lastly, our food drive is in full swing. We are categorizing and tallying the goods that come in. Thanks for your help with this! If you have not yet sent in the permission slip, please send it in next week. Information came home today regarding our traditional Food Drive and delivery to the New Boston Food Pantry. Although we have listed certain days for bringing items in from the list...truly any day is a-okay to bring in any items that are on the list.
I will also be looking for plastic grocery bags and lots of them. If you have some to spare, we will need them to bag up the items before we head out on our delivery! Homework for the month of December will be posted on SEESAW tomorrow. I will leave up the November assignments until Friday afternoon for anyone who needs a bit more time finishing up November's work. The kids are doing a good job with the addition of winter gear. The extra pair of clean shoes is really helping to keep our learning space dry and clean. Thank you! I hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful Thanksgiving.
I am looking forward to seeing your kids tomorrow. We have a great week planned. We will be focusing on mapping skills this week. We will review the concept of continent, country, community, and town. We will also learn about cardinal directions and make a compass rose. In math, we continue to focus on our math facts, skip counting, and working with numbers to 100. The cold weather is upon us. Please be sure to read my previous post regarding winter gear. As we return from Thanksgiving Break, I'd like to start getting the kids into the cold weather routine.
When the snow flies, boots will begin to come in, and with that, children will need a change of shoes. The kids are welcome to keep a pair of shoes here at school that they can change into. This will eliminate a bulky pair of shoes in the backpack, and can insure that your child will have a clean dry footwear option. Anything with a hard sole is okay. I would suggest a croc-style, hard soled slipper, or slip on style shoe. **However...P.E. is on Mondays. Children will need sneakers for this day.** Children are welcome to do the same with snowpants. If you'd like your child to have a pair of snowpants to keep here at school, that is fine too. Be sure to put your child's name in them. I'm hoping that having these two items on hand will make backpacks a little less full and that children will be prepared for the weather. Additionally, outdoor learning...aka Forest School will continue each Friday. It will be important for kids to be prepared with the proper gear for our adventures. Please let me know if your child will be bringing a pair of shoes and snow-pants to keep in the classroom. That way, I can be sure they exit the backpack, and I can help your child establish this new routine. |
